Welcome to 4chon's Frequently Asked Questions page. After reading the FAQ, be sure to familiarize yourself with the Rules before posting.
4chon is a small, image-based bulletin board where anyone can post comments and share images anonymously. We currently host a limited number of boards and rely on users to create the culture. We are an unofficial, independent spin-off entirely unrelated to 4chan.
Simply leave the [Name] field blank when submitting your post. You will be assigned the default name "Anonymous." Your IP address is kept completely private from other users and is only viewable to the site administration for moderation purposes.
If you want to prove your identity across multiple posts without registering an account, place a hash mark ("#") followed by a password after your name in the [Name] field (ex. "User#password"). The server will generate a hashed string unique to that password, displaying as something like User !ozOtJW9BFA.
A capcode verifies someone as a 4chon staff member. The administrator capcode displays securely as "## Admin" alongside an icon. If someone claims to be a mod or admin but lacks the red or purple text, they are an impersonator and should be reported.
Entering "sage" (by itself) into the [Options] field while replying will cause the thread not to bump to the top of the board's index page. It is used to reply to a thread without keeping it at the top of the catalog.
If you see a post breaking global or board-specific rules, check a post then scroll down until you see the report button or click the "▶" button and "Report".
Submitting intentionally false or "joke" reports wastes volunteer time and will result in a ban.
When you submit a post, a password cookie is automatically set that will allow you to delete your post should you choose to. As long as your browser retains this cookie, you will be able to delete posts made using it. To delete your post(s), check the box in the upper lefthand corner of the specific post(s) you wish to remove, and scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the [Delete] button on the right. Checking the [x File Only] box will cause only the image to be deleted, leaving the comment untouched. Note that some boards and threads (ex. stickies) do not allow a user to delete their posts.
"Anonymous" is the default identity of all users on this site. It represents the collective userbase. By removing persistent identities, content is judged solely on its own merit rather than the reputation of the person posting it.
"GETs" occur when a post receives a unique or milestone ID number (e.g., 1000000). While users may celebrate them, the administration does not care about them, and we do not sticky threads just because they got a "GET."
Shitposting is the act of knowingly contributing low-quality, off-topic, or ill-intentioned bait to a board. While some boards have looser rules regarding this, rampant shitposting on topic-specific boards will result in bans.
"Stickied" threads are locked to the top of a board's index page by staff. They are usually reserved for official announcements, rules for a specific board, or temporary containment threads.
Thread sinking is an administrative feature unique to 4chon that allows moderators to push a disruptive or dying thread directly to the bottom of the board (usually page 10-15) without deleting it or perma-saging entirely. This is rate-limited to prevent abuse.
The blotter is the rolling log of updates found at the top of the desktop site. It provides brief notices regarding new boards, site downtime, and policy changes.
CAPTCHA is an annoying but entirely necessary verification system. It ensures that a submission is coming from a real person. Without it, the boards would be flooded and destroyed by automated spam bots/raiders within minutes.
We occasionally offer free 4chon Passes to users with a proven track record of quality posting. This allows you to bypass the CAPTCHA. If applications for Passes are open, instructions will be posted on the Blotter.
Boards have a maximum page limit. When a thread is pushed past the final page by newer threads, it is automatically and permanently deleted (404'd) by the server. Alternatively, your thread may have been deleted by a janitor for breaking board/global rules.
The site is owned and operated by moo.
The administrator can be contacted at moo@4chon.org. Please bear in mind that the site is run on a volunteer basis, and you should not expect an immediate response.
Janitors are anonymous volunteers who help keep the site clean by deleting rule-breaking posts and submitting ban requests. They do not have capcodes and are forbidden from revealing their identity to the public.
Admission to the staff is generally closed unless specified otherwise. When we need more janitors, an announcement will be made on the Blotter detailing how to apply.
If you have been banned, you will receive a prominent error message telling you that you are when attempting to post. If you are getting standard 404 or 503 connection errors, that is a server issue, not a ban.
If your ban is eligible for an appeal (within 3 days), an appeal form will be presented to you on the ban page itself. Do not email the administrator to complain about a 3-day ban for shitposting. It will be ignored.
4chon runs on a modified version of Yotsuba. It is patched together to function in the modern era.
Alongside standard JPG, PNG, and GIF formats, we allow WebP uploads. We do this primarily to save on server bandwidth and storage costs. Animated WebP files are pretty much also supported.
The site officially launched its current iteration in 2026.
An administrator bought a typo domain name for seven dollars and decided to see what would happen. The rest is history.
